How long should a meta description be?
Aim for 140–160 characters. Google does not set a character limit for meta descriptions. It cuts them off by pixel width: about 920 pixels on desktop, which is usually 150–160 characters, and about 680 pixels on mobile, which is usually around 120 characters. Anything past that point is replaced with "…".
Because most searches happen on phones, put the key benefit and your call to action in the first 120 characters. The rest can add detail for desktop searchers.
How long should a meta title be?
Aim for 50–60 characters, or up to about 580 pixels on desktop. Put the main keyword near the start and your brand name at the end, so the important part survives if Google trims it. Very long titles, or titles stuffed with keywords, are also more likely to be rewritten by Google.
Why pixels matter more than characters
Every letter takes up a different amount of space. "W" and "M" are wide, "i" and "l" are narrow. Two titles with exactly 60 characters can be cut off at different points, so this checker measures both the character count and the pixel width, using the same font size Google uses in results.

How to write a meta description that gets clicks
- Match the search. Use the words people actually search for. Google bolds them in the result.
- Lead with the benefit. Say what the reader gets, not who you are.
- Add proof. A specific detail such as years of experience or a certification builds trust.
- End with an action. "Book a free audit" or "See pricing" tells people what happens next.
- Write one for every page. Duplicate descriptions make pages harder to tell apart.
